Dr. Julie Detweiler is the Assistant Professor of Clarinet at Valdosta State University, Principal Clarinetist with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra, and the Eb clarinetist with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with multiple orchestras around the country, including the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, and the New England Symphonic Ensemble, among others. An avid chamber musician, Dr. Detweiler made her Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall in 2006 in a joint chamber music concert, and she is a founding member of Duo Lucent, a clarinet duo. Duo Lucent performed at the RioWinds Festival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in November 2023 and at the ICA Clarinetfest in Dublin, Ireland in August 2024 and in Fort Worth, Texas, in July 2025.
Before joining the faculty at Valdosta State University, Dr. Detweiler was on faculty at Florida A&M University and Florida State University. She has recently spent her summers teaching at the FAMU and FSU Summer Music Camps. Dr. Detweiler has also served as a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist, as well as taught in the pre-college programs at both the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School.
Dr. Detweiler completed her Doctor of Music degree in clarinet performance at Florida State University and holds degrees from Northwestern University and the State University of New York at Potsdam. She is also pursuing a Master of Science degree in Sport Psychology from Florida State University. Dr. Detweiler is a Buffet Artist and a Vandoren Artist-Clinician.
